Harvest Time!

Harvest is the time when anyone associated with a vineyard can identify with a chicken trying to lay an egg. The big event is expected but exactly when it is going to happen is unpredictable. There are indications (such as rising sugars in the grapes) but many other factors are involved. Pick the grapes too early and they might not be sweet enough for good wine, too late and there may not be enough acidity for sparklings. Wait too long and the whole crop could be gobbled by the birds and deer or ravaged by a disease. Harvest day itself is very exciting, although nerve wracking too – what if there turn out to be more grapes than the crop estimate and the logistics are thrown awry, what if a freak thunderstorm strikes, what if everyone who said they’ll help pick doesn’t show up. So far the gathering in of grapes is has been a joyous affair – here’s hoping 2022 is too! The grapes are looking good so far…….
