These Seyval blanc vines are ready for their yearly prune, each individual treated differently in order to encourage each vine to produce the best crop for this year, but also years to come. The pruning done now will also shape the fruiting canes for the 2022 crop.

Hendred Mist disappeared almost as soon as it descended. Or to put it another way épuisé, ausverkauft, wyprzedany, vendido a peso, esaurito, распроданный, 売切れの, 某 物 全 部 卖 光 ,يَبِيعُ كُلُّ التَّذَاكِر , uitverkocht. The Madeleine Angevine vines are thriving in the fertile limey soil, producing these little green gems of juicy splendour. To satisfy this demand the vineyard expansion will continue again this year with vines from the nursery planted out in the coming months. Interestingly, Hendred Mist has wet the whistle extremely locally – with most wine picked up by people who live within a few miles.
Somewhat different his year, a little team gathered in the grapes while the sun shone, just dodging the rain. Grapes were perfect and sweet. They have been taken for pressing and some are just starting their fermentation into still wine to be ready in the spring while others begin the 3-4 year transformation into sparkling wine.
Taking it easy and catching a few rays before harvest begins. Monitoring the sugars and acidity levels in the grapes are key to picking at exactly the right time to produce the best wine possible. A delicate art it is and in combination with confirmatory tests at the wine-makers a window for the harvest date is chosen. Later than usual this year, as the late frosts meant the secondary buds took over in producing fruit. The quality is just as good, you just have to look harder to find them!
The coveted ‘Best Sparkling Wine’ trophy 2020 comes home for Hendred Brut 2015. The award is presented here to Eileen and David Bell by Denise Santilli of the Thames and Chilterns Vineyards Association. Alongside are Philippe Desaint, a valuable recent addition to the vineyard and Biagio Grillo who has had a hand in the vineyard since it began almost 50 years ago. Hendred Brut 2015 has just been awarded the Sparkling Wine Trophy (and gold medal) in the regional competition. Thames and Chilterns Vineyards Association incorporates over 25 vineyards, some very large producing some superb wines which makes this all the more of an honour. How can this be? Is it the excellent ‘terroir’ in East Hendred for grape growing, the aged vines, the diligent wine-making or the fact that the vines were blessed in 2015…. Half the stocks of the 2015 Brut have already gone (via our cellar door and a few select local farm shops/deli’s) but pre-disgorging tastings of the 2016 vintage, due to be ready in the autumn, promise more tantalizing bubbles to come.
