English Wine and Food Festival

Hendred Vineyard will be with other local vineyards and artisan food producers at Brightwell Vineyard (OX10 8LJ) on 8th June for a festival of wine and food.  Do come along and sample the delicious produce of this area.

Tidying things up in the vineyard, collecting up the vine stakes.   Wages comprise QGardens ice-cream - seems like fair trade.

Vine nursery

Time to plant a new generation of vines.  Biagio the local expert, has been perfecting his technique for a few years and the ground is prepared very carefully before the cuttings are installed.  A mystery creature has squashed a few.... is it the curious muntjack or the sneaky fox.....

Tying down

After pruning, shooting canes are tied down to trellising, in preparation for the start of budding.  Shop next open for tasting and sales of remaining Hendred Brut on 13th April.

Saw, lop, prune and another vine is done.....

The frosty vines are undergoing a brutal pruning to neaten them up for the new season.  This diligent work takes time but is such a pleasure when the sun is shining, despite the cold.  Local vineyard expert - the legendary Biagio can tame the most unruly vine.

All is quiet in the deep dark vineyard

As the sun rises on the bare vines at the start of a new year, we reflect on how the growing conditions of 2018 were so good to produce a healthy crop and hope that 2019 brings good weather again.   The vineyard lies tranquil for now, in rest, before the magic of the growing cycle starts all over again.

Hendred folklore

The folklore associated with the harvest at Hendred Vineyard is intriguing and several villagers have approached us to see if this ancient tradition will ever be re-enacted.  So for the October 2019 harvest we seek to assemble a posse and harvest the grapes the old fashioned way.  If you can harvest some grapes without any fingers in the basket (they spoil the wine) then you qualify for some kind of lunch feast - asserted in folklore as a key part of the tradition.  We will just be doing this… continue reading

Golden leafed vines

The vines are glowing with autumn colours and resting......   Shop opening for tastings and sales of Hendred Brut ALL Saturdays in December 2-5pm and for one Friday only 23rd November 12-1.30pm.
